HEALTH PROMOTION ESSAY CRITIQUE

Guidelines for Research Grant Proposal:
• (double spaced, 1inch margin, 12pt font)
• Required References: 15 total
➢ 5 references from NIH, CDC, reputable organization (i.e. American Cancer
Society) – .com references are unacceptable.
o These references you will use for the “Importance of the topic”
section
➢ 10 peer-reviewed journal articles (not older than 2009) reporting on
programs that are similar to your program
o These references you will use for the “Critical review on similar
programs” section
Start out like this:
Background and Significance
a) Importance of the Topic
• No longer than 1-1.5 pages (I am deducting points if you exceed the page
limitations)
• 3 paragraphs
➢ 1st paragraph -> MORTALITY : report mortality rates of general
population and compare to your target population
➢ 2nd paragraph -> MORBIDITY : report incidence/prevalence rates of
the condition and its risk factors in the general population and
compare your target population
➢ 3rd paragraph -> COST : report expenditures to treat condition (also
to treat comorbidities of that condition)
• Use APA style in-text references
b) Critical Review on Similar programs
• No longer than 2.5 pages (I am deducting points if you exceed the page
limitations)
• 10 peer-reviewed journal articles reporting on programs that are similar to
your program
Best Approach:
➢ Select Journal articles reporting on programs NOT on surveys
➢ Similar programs as yours means that the topic, the setting, the
population and the type of prevention are as similar as possible to
your program.
➢ Most comprehensive Database PUBMED; You can also use CINAHL or
MEDLINE however they might focus more on clinical treatments,
which is not the focus of health education.
➢ Use interchangeable Key words (i.e. African American, Black //Youth,
Teenagers//Older Adults, Elders, Seniors // Program, Intervention
etc.)
➢ Use Full-text Articles (Abstracts will not provide you with detailed
information)
➢ For each article use a separate sheet of paper to extract the
following information (write the APA style reference citation on top
of the page):
✓ What types of components and activities were implemented
by the program? Who implemented them/ What skills did
they have?
✓ Intensity: How much contact hours did participants have
with the program
✓ What Theoretical model was used in the program?
✓ Sampling methods/recruitment methods?
✓ What Pre/Post test was used? If it is suitable (i.e. it
measures your objectives) USE EXISTING INSTRUMENT. Access
Pre/Post test through Google… Note: YOU HAVE TO INCLUDE
THE FULL PRE/POST TEST IN YOUR APPENDIX
✓ Was the program effective?
• After assembling all ten pages (ten programs) compare and contrast
➢ i.e. : “ Edwards et al 2010 effectively used trained bilingual
community outreach workers to recruit Latinas 40years of age
and older for a Diabetes management program. This recruitment
approach was successfully replicated for heart health and
wellness programs (Hernandez et al 2011, Gutierrez et al 2013)
as well as for other populations such as African American women
(Moore et al 2013) and Vietnamese women (Nguyen et al 2011).
➢ In the previous example you have covered 5 references in one
paragraph.
➢ You want to report similarities and differences of the approaches
that you review.
➢ If you see a model or theory being consistently and successfully
used in programs of your topic and population use that theory/
model for your program
c) Linking goals and objectives to their Theoretical Relevance
• No longer than 2.5 pages (I am deducting points if you exceed the page
limitations)
• Start out by describing in one paragraph (no more than 3-4 sentences) the
theoretical model that you will use for your program (i.e. Health Belief
model, Transtheoretical model, Social Learning Theory etc.). Use behavioral
models not planning models (i.e. PRECEDE-PROCEED model is a planning
model)
• Take each component of the model and define it.
• Link to each component of the model the component of your program
➢ i.e.: “Perceived susceptibility is defined as […] . The chubby-wubby
prevention program (this would be the name of your program)
addresses perceived susceptibility by […]
➢ In describing your program components be specific. It is not enough
that you say you will “educate”. Describe how you will educate.
Who will be educating.
➢ Describe the “dose-response” of each program component. Doseresponse refers to how much contact will the participants have to
each activity that you describe.
➢ Remember: This is the only time I will see what you actually will be
doing with your participants. Be CONCISE & SPECIFIC
