The bright orange and graphs were really eye catching. The rhetor used Ethos with this design by showing his credibility as a graphic designer.

Rhetorical Situation

The rhetor for my resume analysis is Roland Martial. We can determine that he is interested in the fields of graphic design for Hire or Freelance. Roland studied Graphic Design at the University of Bolton, where he graduated in 2011.

Roland also includes a link to his online portfolio. Due to there being no cover letter, we can’t assume whom his direct/intended audience is.

For the purpose, I didn’t want to be too specific based off assumptions. I stated he was looking for freelance work and/or hiring. Due to already graduating, Roland may be looking for a full time position or possibly a freelance job to help further his experience within the graphic design field.

The context is a visual resume with no cover letter. This visual resume presents his abilities as a graphic designer/ illustrator, which will give employers an opportunity to see what Roland could bring to their company.

Based on Roland’s resume, his job interest fall within the graphic designer category. Being an illustrator whether for a company’s identity or website, to advertising all falls under becoming a graphic designer. Due to his experience and knowledge within branding, copywriting, exhibition design, advertising, and website design he could easily become a multimedia designer and or advertiser.

First glancing at the resume, employers automatically see his skill in graphic design and advertising since he’s promoting/advertising himself for a job. Although this resume design is not typically seen within the contemporary business world, it may be traditional in the graphic design/advertising to show their design abilities.

Roland hasn’t had much work experience, his only experience was an internship that only last for two months during his college years. Since graduating, he has not had a full time job that entailed graphic design. Roland failed to list any references that could provide feedback for his work ethic whether it be a previous employer and/or professor. Most resumes require cover letters, on his resume he has an area named “Why we should work together” which could have been replaced with an objective, and the reasoning for why they should work together could be included in a cover letter.

If I were an employer I would choose against hiring Ronald. I would base my decision on that fact that there was no cover letter to give me a brief reason as to why I should hire him, no reference to back up his work or give him credibility, work experience only consisted of an internship and nothing after graduating. Also, the tone of this resume was not very professional such as him saying “check out my online portfolio” and “Why we should work together!”
