China in 20th Century

“China’s story is not just the account of the forgotten Allied power, but of the Allied power whose government and way of life was most changed by the experience of war… wartime conditions shaped society in ways that have persisted even to the present day.” –Rana Mitter, Forgotten Ally

Write My Essay For Me

China’s war with Japan is a watershed event that divides its twentieth-century history roughly in half. When Japan finally surrendered in 1945, the country was a very different place than it had been at the start of the conflict in 1937. The eight years of warfare affected nearly every aspect of life. In some cases, the war accelerated or extended trajectories of change that had been building since the end of the Qing dynasty, and in other cases it disrupted or deflected them in new directions.

Your assignment is to write a 5-7 page paper(double-spaced) analyzing the impact of the war on one of the four key thematic relationships that are the focus of our course. In other words, you may choose anyone of the following topics to write your paper on:

1. How and why did the war impact the changing relationship between state and society?
2. How and why did the war impact the changing relationship between city and countryside?3. How and why did the war impact the changing relationship between center and periphery?4. How and why did the war impact the changing relationship between China and the world?

In planning your answer to one of the questions above, you will want to consider what the status of the relationship was before the war; how the relationship changed during the war; and, most importantly, your explanation of why it changed in the way it did; additionally, you might also consider whether these changes were temporary or lasted beyond the war itself.

II. SOURCES

You must cite specific passages from sources as evidence to support your analysis in the paper. However, this is not a research paper – you are not expected to use sources beyond those already listed on the course syllabus. The main source of information for your paper should be Rana Mitter’s book on the war, Forgotten Ally(This is the book).

When referencing sources in your paper, use in-text citations. At the end of a sentence in which you are citing a source, include the author’s last name, and the page number(s), all enclosed in parentheses. For example:
According to Rana Mitter in Forgotten Ally, aerial bombing had a profound impact on
everyday life in Chongqing (Mitter, 176-178).

If you cite a source from outside the syllabus, you must include a full reference list entry for that source at the end of your paper.
