Prompt: Thomas Smith combines two distinct views of love in order to develop his own account of romantic love. The focus of this paper is to develop your own view of romantic love, and how it relates to the features given by Bertocci and Smith (and Frankfurt and Nozick).
1. What, in general, is your view of romantic love? What does it mean, on your view, to romantically love another person? Can you spell out and explain, in some detail, at least two distinct features of your own view of romantic love?
2. Is your view consistent with (can be true as the same time as) Smith’s final view that love requires a “we” informed by the four features Frankfurt notes (disinterested concern, concern for a particular person, identification of interests, and involuntariness), and that the object of love is the combination of yourself-and-your-beloved? If it is, explain this. If it is not, explain what, specifically, about your view clashes with or is inconsistent with Smith’s final view.
3. In your view, what role does romantic love play in a well-lived life? Is it necessary, as it is for Bertocci?
4. Give an argument for the correctness of your own view about the nature of romantic love. Explain what advantages, if any, your own view has over that of Smith and/or our other authors in this section.
